DJ Di-Franzo
ABOUT DJ DI-FRANZO
France Ledwaba a.k.a DJ Di-Franzo, was born and bred in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria. His earliest memories of his love for music were during his primary school days dancing to his brothers Disco and African Contemporary music. But I wasn’t until after high school that he realised his dream of becoming a DJ. During his high school days he played at family gatherings, and friends’ parties and other do’s. In 1997 he met DJ Slim-Jan who taught him the basics of beat matching. From there on Di-Franzo spent sleepless nights practicing his mixing and in no time he felt he was an expert moving from bedroom DJ to stokvels, birthday parties, and various social gatherings. In 1998, his beat-matching teacher disappeared with Di-Franzo’s vinyl collection, a mixer and a turntable. After several attempts of hunting for the guy, Di-Franzo tried to pick up the piece and carry on buying music, hoping to recover slowly from the misfortune. But due to financial pressure he decided to put everything on hold in 2002. In 1999 he enrolled at Phakamani Music Institute to study music business and was inspired there by the love of Jazz and African sounds by fellow students. He fell in love with the sounds and started collecting African Jazz an later all types. A year later he worked for Di-Franzo always had passion for music and entertainment. In 2001 he worked for (Music Industry Development Initiative (MIDI) Trust. He also worked as an events co-ordinator, facilitated workshops and organised some workshops as part of the South African Music Week. It was in 2007 when he was stage managing an SAYCO event in Cape Town that when a DJ could no make it to the event, he took over and played at the do. This, he says, ‘invoked the sleeping giant in me’. At the end of that year he shared a stage with Fistaz Mixwell, DJ Sbu, and Tbo touch at the Annual Home Coming Concert. Di-Franzo has played in several projects including The Homecoming Concert, Savanna Lemon Revolution, Edgars Music Series. He has shared the stage with DJ’s Lulo Café (Soulcandi), Fresca (Soulcandi), Monde (Yfm), Linda (Sony BMG), Zan-D (Yfm), King Deetoy, MacG (Yfm), Tholi B (Yfm), Vinni Small (DJs Ball), Josh (Blue Peach), Gobs to name a few.
